Taking Action

If you feel you may have become the victim of identity theft or other fraud, you should take action immediately.

If you have not done so already, obtain a current copy of your credit report from one of the three main credit reporting agencies. Free reports are also available through the Federal Trade Commission website.

If your credit report contains items you did not authorize, you can place a fraud alert on your file. Fraud alert messages notify potential credit lenders of the possibility that someone is using your information without your consent. They will then take extra steps to verify the identification of the applicant before extending credit.

You may place an initial (90 day) fraud alert on your file by calling one of the three agencies above. You also may place an extended (7 year) fraud alert by writing to one of the agencies above and providing an Identity Theft Report. Please see the Federal Trade Commission website for more information on steps you can take to prevent and correct identity fraud.
